Airway Management – Chevy Chase, MD
The Key to Breathing Easy

When it comes to breathing, your lungs seem like the star of the show. The truth is, though, that multiple structures play an important role in your ability to breathe and sleep well. Dr. Yu of our Chevy Chase dental practice recognizes this, so she always encourages patients to mind their airway health. It can be the key to breathing easy! Just what is airway management, and how might it support your overall wellness? This page explains some important information.
What Does Airway Management Involve?

Airway management is all about how the oral structures affect breathing. A qualified practitioner can note how the form and placement of these structures may disrupt breathing, which can lead to sleep issues and other complications. Often, the goal of airway management is to open the upper airway to the extent possible so you can enjoy easy and uninterrupted breathing both day and night.
Although Dr. Yu is enthusiastic about airway health, she does not offer airway management services. However, our team may be able to connect you with a local practitioner who can address your specific needs.
Common Types of Airway Issues

Some of the most common airway issues that we see include:
Tongue and Lip Ties

In some cases, the upper lip or tongue is restricted due to an overly thick or short piece of connective tissue. That prevents the oral structures from moving in the way that they should. People with a lip or tongue tie may be more prone to chronic mouth breathing, which can lead to dry mouth, dental problems, and airway irritation.
Lip and tongue ties are usually diagnosed and treated during infancy. However, if they are not addressed in a timely manner, they can continue to cause problems into adulthood.
Sleep Disordered Breathing or Sleep Apnea

If you have a narrow jaw, significant dental misalignment, or other problems with your oral structures, that can interfere with the free flow of oxygen, particularly when you are asleep. As a result, you might even experience episodes known as apneas, which are periods when breathing ceases for 10 seconds or longer. Sleep apnea is dangerous because it is associated with an increased risk of many health problems, including heart issues and dementia.

Malocclusion

Malocclusion describes any form of bite misalignment, such as overbite, underbite, crossbite, or open bite.
If there is misalignment between your upper and lower jaws, this can lead to airway restriction. Malocclusion is also associated with an increased risk of teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism).
